The GAGB & Land Agreements

A lot of you in the UK will most probably already know about the following website, but as I am in the process of setting my own cache, I thought it might be a good time to point you in the direction of The GAGB.

The GAGB (The Geocaching Association of Great Britain) is a fantastic website with an absolute bucket load of information for the UK Cacher and some pretty useful info for overseas cachers as well.

There is probably too much for me to go through here but the most helpful section of the site in my opinion is the 'Land Agreements' page. This comes in very handy when placing your own caches as it can make the process of getting permission a lot easier. On the 'Land Agreements' page you will find a list of Landowners. The first section (in green) is a list where permission has been granted and below that (in red), a list where permission has been denied.

On viewing an agreement you will see some extra information, detailing who the Landowner is, who the Geocacher contact is, a brief outline of any restrictions and the application process required by the landowner. On some agreements you may also find a map showing you the areas & boundaries covered by the agreement.

Obviously, any cache you do then decide to place must also comply with the GAGB guidelines and the  Groundspeak Cache Guidelines.

Unfortunately, if the area you want to place your cache is in the Red section then chances are you wont get very far although it still may be worth looking at the agreement incase your cache falls outside of the restricted area(s) detailed.

If you find that the area you are looking at isn't covered in the list, permission may still be required but an agreement may not have been set up. If this is the case and you're unsure on the best course of action, you could try contacting The GAGB at gagbcommittee@gagb.co.uk or contact them on the telphone number listed on their website.

I hope the GAGB website is useful for you. As I mentioned above, there is a lot of information contained on their site that I simply dont have space for here so I suggest you head on over and take a look!

Happy Caching!!!
